Description

The Uniontown Morning Herald, Feb. 12, 1946, Jan. 30, 1945 reports that the first baseball team in Uniontown, the Vantage Base Ball Club, was organized in May of 1866 by (among others) Gen. S. M. Baily and Col. Andrew Stewart. James G. Johnston played. Hugh Oliphant of Princeton U. pitched.

The first game in that town was Sept. 22, 1866, against a Waynesburg team that had future Iowa Governor Albert Cummings on it.

Uniontown is 46 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. It had 2,503 residents in 1870.
