Since this article I've encountered newly online newspapers which improve and expand the above study. Most notably, it's added teams in East St. Louis, IL as early as 1866. Consult the latest update of protoball for more. I've tried to make the Illinois data (clubs and cities) as complete as possible through 1870.

Regarding the last slide: the updated data is: Of cities with 5,000 or more population: all 22 had baseball teams by 1870 for cities 3-5,000, 16 of 17 had baseball

for cites 2-3,000, 9 of 15 had baseball
