A grand match at base-ball came off in this city the 29th, ult., between our two clubs – the “Olympic” and “Victor.” The “Olympic's” were most valiantly led by Capt. William N. Burris, and the “Victor's” no less so by Capt. Patrick Denning. The membership of the “Olympic” consists of the following young men – mainly College students, viz: - William N. Burris, J.B. Chiles, E.H. Miller, F. Venable, J. Austin, M.A. Miller, G. Hawkins, W. Fields, and G. Franklin. The “Victor,” is composed of the following young men of the City, viz: - Patrick Denning, William Boltwood, William Wymore, Michael Hartigan, Frank Cockrill, Henry Bishop, William Stevenson, Charles Waples, and George Nelson. Mr. A.J. Spalding, of Kearney, filled the position of Umpire with much credit to himself and general satisfaction to the players.

The match continued for three hours, and the playing was maintained on each side with undaunted spirit and enthusiasm. The contest raged with alternate success. Until the last moment it was uncertain who would triumph. Finally victory perched upon the banners of the “Victors” by two scores – 31 and 29 – so slight a triumph as almost to take away from defeat its sting. We hear that the “Olympics” are keen for another trial of skill at an early day.

We wish the clubs much success. It is a manly, health-imparting game, and should be encouraged. Certain pale-faced clerks and students would do well to make themselves practically acquainted with it.
