The Alexandria Gazette, October 30, 1866 notes that Petersburg has just organized a baseball club.
This is probably the Independents Club, which is mentioned numerous times in the local newspapers the next couple years. For example, the first mention of a baseball team in the Petersburg Progress-Index is March 27, 1867 where a meeting of the Independent BBC is announced. Same Jan. 8, 1868 reviews the Independent's 1867 season, where they won 9 of 13 games. This article gives the players names, offensive statistics, and what teams they beat. Same May 25, 1868 announces the newly elected officers of the club, with David A. Bisset Jr. as president. Bisset (1842-85) was a VMI attendee, civil engineer,a nd 2nd Lt. CSA during the war.
Petersburg VA (current pop. about 32,500) is about 25 miles S of Richmond VA and about 55 miles N of the North Carolina border.
