Description

A Memphis newspaper printed this: “It is reported that the Mutuals of this city, and champions of Tennessee, have received a challenge to play a match game with the female base ball club of Illinois, which club is known by the appellation of the Picked Femi-nine.”

It is possible that this was a joke based on a quip that had been circulating in various papers for years about a name for a female base ball nine being a "Femi-nine." But it is also possible that someone like Sylvester Wilson had organized some sort of early barnstorming female team. More research needs to be done.
