Chapter 6, Page 203

"...Even more importantly, for every player and club that proved itself on the national stage,
there were dozens who became local legends. In Pana, Illinois for example, "the first
baseball club was named the Excelsiors. J.C. McQuigg, still a leading attorney of Pana,
was the star catcher and batter of the club. He was known as the Babe Ruth of Central
Illinois, and won the state championship by knocking the ball out of the state fairgrounds
at Decatur, Illinois, for a home run and brought in three men with him, winning the game
and the silver cup."

Jay McAfee note:
J.C. McQuigg is James C. McQuigg, son of John McQuigg Sr. & Sarah McAfee of Wayne County, Ohio. James was a Civil War Veteran and was severely wounded at the battle of Chickasaw Bluffs, Dec. 29, 1862.

Warning: Users should not rely on a team's won-loss record as a reflection of its "standing" among all base ball clubs. Team schedules were not balanced, and a good record against mostly weak opponents does not signify a leading club.
