Description

"A respite from league action came in late July [1903] when the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad team arrived via steamer for a “baseball carnival.” The Whitehorse club would play each of the four clubs, then conclude with a game against a picked Dawson nine. The host teams slipped star players to each other. When the railroaders objected, Dawsonites pointed at the half-dozen Skagway recruits beefing up Whitehorse’s roster."

Phil Williams, "Dawson City Baseball." May 2021 SABR Deadball Era Committee Newsletter

Humber, "Diamonds of the North," p. 105, mentions a 1904 game "on the Queen's birthday" between "a team from Skagway, Alaska and the Yukon town of Whitehorse." Whitehorse won 10 to 9. Whitehorse also won the return match, played at Skagway July 4th.

The Juneau "Daily Record-Miner" May 17, 1904 reports in a lengthy article titled "Baseball in Alaska" on the several teams that played in last year's state tournament or will play in this year's tournament, including teams in Whitehorse, Dawson (which won last year), Skagway, Juneau, Treadwell, Douglas City and Ketchikan. The Fairbanks "Daily News-Miner," June 1, 1910, reports than in the annual three-cornered baseball tournament at Whitehorse, the Juneau club won over Whitehorse, Skagway and Douglas Island.

Johanson, "The Golden Days of Baseball" says that Whitehorse beat Skagway 15-14 in Sept. 1902.
